About Chessboxing Sport

The basic idea in Chessboxing is to combine the no.1 thinking sport and the no.1
fighting sport into a hybrid that demands the most of its competitors – both mentally
and physically, yet which can be performed by easiest means.
In a chessboxing fight two opponents play alternating rounds of chess and boxing. The
contest starts with a round of chess, followed by a boxing round, followed by another
round of chess and so on. In every round of chess the FIDE rules for a ´Blitz game´
apply, in every boxing round the AIBA rules apply with the following extensions and
modifications :
In a contest there shall be 11 rounds, 6 rounds of chess, 5 rounds of boxing.
The contest is decided by:
- checkmate (chess round)
- exceeding the time limit (chess round)
- retirement of an opponent (chess or boxing round)
- KO (boxing round), or
- referee decision (boxing round).
- If the chess game ends in a stalement, the opponent with the higher score
in boxing wins. If there is an equal score, the opponent with the black
pieces wins.

ABOUT US

CBOI Founder Montu Das opened the Kolkata Chess Boxing Club Kolkata with a demonstration fight in the Bakul Math park in front of 1,500 spectators on 27th of November. It was the very first Chess Boxing fight on Indian soil.

The winner of the fight between Subhas Nashkar from Kolkata and Soumen Pramanik from Purba Midnapur was Nashkar: Checkmate in the 7th round.

Montu Das has been practicing Martial Arts for the last 23 years. He was Indian Karate Champion in 1995 and Kickboxing Champion in 1997. He has organised numerous kickboxing events all around his home country. He has now dedicated himself to promote Chess Boxing in India.

History

The hybrid sport was envisioned in 1992 by cartoonist Enki Bilal, and chess boxing was featured in his graphic novel Froid equateur. Iepe Rubingh brought the concept to life, fighting under the name Iepe the Joker. Rubingh felt the method described in the book, a boxing match followed by a chess match, was impractical. He instead decided on alternating rounds of chess and boxing.

- A similar concept was featured in the 1991 Finish film Uuno Turhapuro-herra Helsingin herra, where the hero plays blindfold chess against one person using a hands-free telephone headset while boxing another person. It is not known if Bilal was aware of the move. - There was also a 1979 movie by director Joseph Kuo called “Ninja Checkmate”; the English-dubbed USA version was known as the “Mystery of Chess Boxing”. It does not feature chess boxing, but it is probably the inspiration for the Wu-Tang Clan song “Da Mystery of Chessboxing” on their first album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 chamber) (1993). Wu-Tang Clan producer RZA is a fan and advocate of the sport.

- The earliest chessboxing reference occurs in London in 1978 when two brothers Stewart and James Robinson began chessboxing at the Samuel Montagu Boys Club.

- The sport is governed by the World Chess Boxing Organisation (WCBO), whose strap line is “The smartest toughest (wo)man on the planet.”

-The first world championship was held in Amsterdam in 2003 and was won by Iepe Rubingh.

- The First European Chess Boxing Championship took place in Berlin on October 1, 2005. and was won by Tihomir Atanassov Dovramadjiev of Bulgaria.

This fantastic sport of mind & physic, “CHESSBOXING” is introduce in India by renewed martial artists Mr. Montu Das as it’s Fonder President of CBOI in the year of 2011.

CHECKMATE MEETS KO: NE...
By Sean Waisglass: There it was in the weekend paper: a Reuters news agency photo of two boxers in the ring sitting on their stools. Both men were stripped to the waist and wearing standard-issue trunks, their hair wet with sweat. All the trappings of a typical bout were present plus one glaring and notable addition - a chess board placed between the two combatants.

Summary

Chess Boxing is a new “hybrid” sport which combines various elements of chess and Boxing into a challenging battle of wills. Though a relatively new sport, Chess Boxing is gradually gaining popularity throughout the world. What sets it apart from others sports in this category is how it requires physical strength and agility as well as strong mental capabilities. Introduced by Iepe Rubingh in its modern form, it was originally conceived by James and Stewart Robinson in Greenwich, England in 1973. In a dramatic display of brawn and brains, players go through alternate rounds of chess and boxing for a total of 11 rounds or until one player wins.(1)

History / Origins

ETYMOLOGY

The term Chess Boxing was first used for this hybrid sport in 1992 by Yugoslavia-born French author Enki Bilal, in his graphic novel “Froid Equateur”. As it combines two classic physical and mental sports, the name is just a combination of their two names into one. Today the term Chess Boxing is often used interchangeably with Chessboxing.

BEGINNINGS

The idea of combining a physical sport with one that requires you to use brain power is not a new one. Many fictional works have depicted the concept in one way or the other. Having said that, Chess Boxing was seen for the very first time in 1970’s at a Boxing club in Greenwich, England. It was conceived by two siblings James and Stewart Robinson. The two, being amateur Boxers and club chess players had a deep interest in both games.. However, it was Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh who introduced Chess Boxing into the modern world. The first Chess Boxing tournament was held in Amsterdam in 2003 which Rubingh won. This was followed by many other events in Europe. Among them the most well-known was the European Chess Boxing Championship in Berlin on October1, 2005. With each passing year, Chess Boxing gained popularity in the world of chess and Boxing. The fact became evident when the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov played a friendly Chess Boxing match in 2008 to show his support.(1)(2)

PRESENT DAY

In recent years numerous Chess Boxing tournaments have been held in European countries, United States and Japan. There are Chess Boxing clubs and matches on local levels in many countries including India. The World Chess Boxing Organization (WCBO) is the governing body for the sport. The organization has a motto, “Fighting is done in the ring and wars are waged on the board.”(3)

More recently Iran has joined in with its Iranian Chess Boxing Organization, ICBO. Many well-known celebrities and famous people have started showing an interest in the sport. Among them is the television producer Timothy Woolgar, who participates actively in hosting Chess Boxing tournaments in London.
Today Chess Boxing competitions require players with extensive skills in both chess and Boxing. The bar for chess experience has been set at 1800, so that even those who are the weakest at playing chess can beset their opponents in Boxing. All world class Boxers have to demonstrate a well-rounded performance in both chess and Boxing. Famous Chess Boxer Sazhin has an ELO rating of 1900 while the European Chess Boxing champion Tihomir Atanassov Dovramadjiev has an outstanding rating of 2300, with multiple wins in chess competitions the world over.

FOLKLORE

With its origin in the world of comic books, people got their very first taste of this exotic sport in the pages of Enki Bilal’s comic book. In the comic, a bout of Boxing was followed by a match of chess. However, being a relatively new sport there is not much in terms of folklore associated with it. It just represents a balance between the physical and the mental abilities of a human being; any person who shows extraordinary skills in chess and Boxing can become a world class Chess Boxer.

Practices

PHILOSOPHY

Chess Boxing has a simple philosophy; to be a world class Chess Boxer you have to be a skilled chess player as well as an exceptional Boxer. This blend of physical and mental abilities in a person is what Chess Boxing is all about. To stretch your body to the limit on a physical level, while honing your brain power is a challenge that not many can undertake. However, that’s precisely the philosophy behind this unusual sport and it is what is making it popular across the globe. There are many physical sports out there, as are games that require a test of mental skill but there are hardly any sports that require both in this way, making Chess Boxing unique in every sense of the word.

Rules / Rulesets

RULES / RULESETS

There are a total of 11 rounds in Chess Boxing. The game can end before that though, if one of the players wins at a round. The game consists of alternate rounds of chess and Boxing but starts with chess. In the chess round each player is given a four minute time for each move for a total of 12 minutes. The Boxing round is three minutes long and scoring is like all Boxing matches, using the “ten-point-must”. If the player knocks out his opponent, he wins the match. At the end of all 11 rounds, if the chess game has ended in a draw, the Boxing scores are used to determine the winner.

POPULAR CULTURE

The release of the 1979 martial arts film, “The Mystery of Chess Boxing”, (Shuang ma lian huan) was a turning point for Chess Boxing and sparked an interest in this unusual sport the world over. It has become part of popular culture and while some regard it as an absurd sport, it continues to grow in popularity among the youth in general and among boxing enthusiasts in particular.

Information about Chess Boxing

Published on : January 29, 2019 Published by : academicchess

Chess boxing is essentially the ultimate test for the body and mind. It artfully combines the mental demands of chess with the physical demands of boxing. Participants take part in alternate rounds that shift between chess and boxing. This sport that is becoming more and more popular but what exactly is it?

Chess boxing is precisely what it claims — an integration of the intellectual components of chess with the physical challenges of boxing. This sport uses the two endurance extremes and craftily blends them together to figure out which participant will prevail in a combat of the mind and the body. Credit for the initial development of the sport is given to Iepe Rubingh, who is a performance artist and painter.

Though, unofficial reports have also stated that the sport was invented back in 1979 by brothers Stewart and James Robinson. Both of these brothers were avid players of chess and they were classed as amateur boxers as well. However, Rubingh has been credited by a number of individuals for the modern version of the sport, which was inspired by Froid Equateur, the 1992 comic that was penned by artist Enki Bilal. The first chess boxing competition took place in 2003 in Berlin.

Governing Body

The World Chess Boxing Organization (WCBO) was established a short time afterwards to help in the expansion of the sport and it has been gaining more and more popularity ever since. In essence, the WCBO governs amateur chess boxing and its main objective is to make sure the sport of chess boxing is established on all continents across the world. The governing body also has a goal of ensuring the official dissemination of chess boxing as an internationally-recognized, self-contained sport.

The organization works totally in line with the philosophy of old ‘mens sana in corpore sano;’ this basically means having a healthy mind and a healthy body. In addition, the Amateur World Championships is organized by the WCBO once per year. The organization is in full support of initiatives for establishing a national organization or chess boxing club all across the world.

What Constitutes a Win?

There are a number of different ways in which fighters can be victorious in a chess boxing battle. During the chess segment of the battle, a winner can be determined by a player exceeding the time limit or via a check mate. During the boxing stage, the winner can be decided by way of a referee decision or knockout. In addition, if the opponent retires, it is possible for a fighter to be victorious in both the chess and boxing segments of the sport.

If there is a situation in which the chess phase of the sport ends in a stalemate, the rival with the top score from the rounds of boxing will be confirmed as the champion. In a case where the points are level, the opponent who has the black pieces in the chess rounds in his or her possession will be declared the winner.

In Which Countries Is the Sport of Chess Boxing Most Popular?

Ever since its inception over the past 15 years, the popularity of chess boxing has rapidly increased. This upsurge in popularity has been especially prevalent across the continent of Europe. Germany, which is the birthplace of chess boxing, is among the countries that have experienced the flourishing of the sport the most in recent years.

In addition, the sport has been thriving in Russia, India and Great Britain. This growth can be attributed to a significant number of the biggest names in the sport hailing from those countries. Furthermore, chess and boxing boast wide levels of participation, in their own right, in these countries. As such, it makes a lot of sense that this hybrid sport merging the two disciplines would become popular there as well.

Training Requirement

Because chess boxing is a hybrid sport, it requires participants to master both of the sports involved. As such, it is required for participants to engage in intense practice for both sports. As a rule of the sport, participants are required to be accomplished to a particular standard in both sports, if they wish to take part in an official competition.

There is a minimum requirement that must be met by participants for both chess and boxing in order to participate in any Chess Boxing Global event. There has to be an Elo rating of a minimum of 1600 and a record of no less than 50 bouts in boxing or a comparable martial arts discipline.

During the competition, participants are required to alternate between the intricate mental demands of chess and the extreme physicality of boxing. This indicates that training must imitate the extreme pressure fighters undergo during these competitions.

Fighters have to train to become capable of focusing their thought process with the adrenaline pumping and with an amplified heart rate when sitting at the chess board. Additionally, they must practice to quickly change from a resting position into a bout of boxing.

Participants can also engage in specialized chess boxing training. Opponents widely rely on interval training and speed chess games are typically used during training to mimic the atmosphere of a chess boxing battle.

Rather than boxing between phases of speed chess, the participants are trained in a series of extreme physical exercises. However, there are competitors who stick to their old school training, with a simple arrangement of sparring combined with speed chess.

Famous Chess Boxing Players

Chess boxing players might not have household names like Usain Bolt, Pele, Michael Jordan or other sporting greats. However, there are some chess boxers who have achieved a new level of renown within the sport. Those who have even a passing interest in the sport will definitely have heard of a few of the fighters below.

These fighters are Nikolay “The Chairman” Sazhin, Russia’s past WBCO world champion, Tihomir “Tigertad” Titschko, Bulgaria’s existing WBCO European champion and Tim Woolgar, UK’s GBCBO UK champion. They have become sufficiently famous to have dedicated pages on Wikipedia.

CHESS BOXING- NETHERLANDS. a. History/origin of the Chess Boxing; b. Weapon used in Chess Boxing; c. Technique involved in Chess Boxing and training availability.

Combining a cerebral sport in the form of “chess” along with a physical one in the form of “boxing” is a unique Northwest European martial art form known as Chess Boxing. This “hybrid” combat form is said to have originated from The Netherlands, and developed by a Dutch performance artist named Iepe Rubingh. Apparently, it was created to be used as a performing art but instead was rapidly converted into a competitive sport. Furthermore, in this combat style, the fighter alternates between a game of chess and a boxing bout.

History/origin of the Chess Boxing:

According to the cultural history of The Netherlands, this form of combat was first developed by a Dutch performance artist named Lepe Rubingh. Apparently, Rubingh wanted to create a form of a sport that fused elements belonging to chess as well as boxing. This idea of combining both chess and boxing was acquired from a French comic titled “Froid Équateur” written by Enki Bilal. However, according to the book, the fighters complete a boxing bout before playing chess, which Lepe felt was not a practical way of using this combat form. In response, he then ensured that a game of chess and a boxing bout was alternatively used, and recreated this form of combat sport which was eventually named “Chess Boxing”. Furthermore, the first official chess boxing tournament was organized in Germany, Berlin in the year 2003. In addition, it was on October 1st, 2005 that the first “European Chess Boxing Championship” was held in Berlin, Germany.

 Weapons used in Chess Boxing:

Since the “striking” technique (mainly punching) is mostly used in chess boxing it is the “hand” of the fighter that serves as a weapon.

Techniques involved in Chess Boxing and training availability:

In terms of technique, a fighter in this combat style mainly makes use of “striking” in the form of “punching” to overcome an opponent. Furthermore, in this combat form, a fighter can achieve victory either through a “knockout” or via a “checkmate”. In addition, in the case of a draw, the fighter who has acquired maximum points in “boxing” is declared to be the winner in this combat style. As for training centers/schools, there are a few available around the world for those interested in learning this “hybrid” martial art form.
